Thank you very much for your comments. With respect to your question, we installed a white vinyl rail that does have a flat cap and allows us to install a decking board on top to provide that look. Your contractors are correct. Timbertech and the vast majority of the synthetic railings are shaped like a “bread loaf”. This is similar to the shape of a banister in ones home. We use Mout Hope Vinyl Railings which is based in Ohio. You can look at their website at www.mounthopefenceanddeck.com for further information. Another brand of vinyl railings we have used is Kroy vinyl.

A couple last things to mention, make sure the supplier installs a 6” wide rail post as the decking board is 5-1/2” wide. This is done so the rail cap terminates at the rail post. Lastly I would highly suggest using a vinyl supplier that manufactures the railings with an aluminum frame within the vinyl. Some of these vinyl suppliers use hollow vinyl which is not strong enough.

Thank you again for perusing our blog and feel free to contact us should you have any other questions. Good luck with your project!
Best Regards,
Michael Reeder

Wondering if you can help. I am in the process of having a deck built usingTimbertech harvest bronze. I saw your beautiful website and videos and wanted to do the same rail caps you did using the white rails with the harvest bronze decking as the rail cap. Both my builder and deck supplier said Timbertech does not make a rail that will accept a flat piece! They gave me Trek railing system but the Harvest Bronze Decking doesnt fit. Can you please let me know what railing system you use and how the matching rail cap fits? DId you use the Timbertech railing system? and is it the exact piece same decking that you used for the rail cap? Think thecolor was called Desert Bronze when you did your deck. Thank you so much for your kind attention.

I have a new home that was built in 2009. It has a very long covered back patio across the back of the home. My master bedroom, bath and closet run alongside the back of the home. I thought about adding a door and making an addition ontop of the patio roof. Not out of windows as I live outside of Phx, AZ so it would be a sauna in there...but my husband says the patio roof was not built to hold that kind of weight. What would need to be done and what cost are we looking at? That will be the determining factor.. Thank you!
