With the season of outdoor living in full swing many of us look forward to the smell of delicious food cooking on the grill and the camaraderie that so often comes along with it. If you want your grill to be part of your new outdoor living area, you need to take some serious considerations into account when designing your new area. You want the location of your grill to be extremely convenient. You can either allocate space on your deck, porch or patio for a grill. Another viable option is to actually add space by extending an area for your grill on your deck, porch or patio such as a deck bump-out or a grill rack.

A few helpful hints to remember if you are planning on incorporating your grill into your deck or patio is that sizes of various grills can differ. A typical gill is 4.5′ wide, but larger models can span from 5′ to 5.5′. With this in mind you want to consider the amount of space the grill will take up and allowing enough space for walking room and maneuverability around the grill. If you have a smoker, or are planning on getting one you will also need to allocate enough space for it as well. You will also want to leave a 2 x 6′ area for the grill and additional room for any accompaniment pieces, such as a smoker.

Deciding what functionality you want your grill area to serve is important to confirm when planning your deck, patio or porch addition. Decisions such as whether or not you are intent on “hanging out” around your grill while entertaining, or whether you will need or want a seating area next to the grill will help determine what type of space you need. If serving food right from the grill is something you  like to be able to do, then a nice sized rail could be the perfect place to put serving platters or rest dinnerware while you and your guests are filling your plates. If you entertain often, you might consider a buffet table in close proximity to your grill that can also hold serving platters.

Key considerations include having the grill out-of-the-way so it doesn’t inhibit traffic flow, or maybe you want the grill area close to the kitchen to make bringing stuff back and forth more convenient. You don’t want to design a grill area that is too close to the house because the heat is a safety concern and can also discolor your siding or home’s exterior materials. But you do want to design it close enough that you aren’t “running your legs off” when you grill or entertain. If you entertain often then maybe an outdoor kitchen would fit your needs better than a grill area. Outdoor kitchens can be outfitted with anything from grills and food preparation areas to refrigerators, food warming drawers and much more.

If grilling during inclement weather is a concern you might consider creating an outdoor structure that would allow for you to grill regardless of rain or snow such as an open porch. A key consideration for grilling out when weather is an issue is the location of your grill in relation to the prevailing winds. If the prevailing winds are West then you would want your grill to be located in the opposite direction. Food stains are also a key point to consider. Many decking materials will stain from food grease spills such as barbecue sauce or wine so it’s important to try to clean them at the time of the stain just as you would inside your home.

One way to put the icing on an a great outdoor design is through beautiful landscaping. Some things you will need to consider if you are planning on adding your landscaping at the time of your outdoor structure addition is the traffic flow of your addition as it will relate to the width, height and spread of the specimens you choose to plant. You will also need to consider the amount of the sun your area receives each day  in relation to your project, this will help you determine which plant material will work best in the area. Maintenance of your plantings is another key factor in helping you make the decision of choosing a perennial or annual border. Perennials require less maintenance in most settings because they don’t require re-planting each season like annuals do. A good idea in landscaping is to use perennials as your foundation border and add in splashes of annual flowers for color each season. Such as Pansies in the autumn months, and geraniums in the summer. This will add variety to your landscape and the change in mood you can portray in  the view from your outdoor structure season to season.

Rustic exposed timber frame porch

Once you’ve decided you want a screen porch, the size, spatial considerations, and functional considerations should always be decided first. The next thing to consider is the look and feel or the interior finish options.

A fair number of our customers want a rustic cabin type feel to their screen porch. This rustic look may be reminiscent of a porch you had in a childhood home or may conjure thoughts about a remote cabin right outside your back door.

Rustic is less ornamental and less finished looking, but is a rustic style less expensive? To answer that we should try to define rustic. On a screened porch, rustic generally means having exposed beams and rafters. Rustic also generally means using mostly bare wood. In most cases it’s pressure-treated pine or cedar. Luckily for those who prefer this style, these are also going to be your value choices.

There are many factors that determine the cost of your screen porch. From an interior finish perspective, a good general rule is that enclosing and wrapping structural elements adds to the cost. You may want enclosed rafters or wrapped columns. These require additional labor and additional materials.

Here are some common upgrades to a rustic style porch. You may want to upgrade your rafters from pressure-treated pine to cedar. When we wrap in cedar, it’s usually a rough finish cedar and that’s less expensive and adds to character of log cabin feel. We can also use smooth cedar with is a little more expensive but is also a nice upgrade to pine.

Here are some common upgrades to a formal style porch. You may want to wrap the roof beams or enclose the rafters to have a more finished ceiling. Some common ceiling finish upgrades from least to most expensive are:

1. Pine tongue & groove
2. Cedar tongue & groove
3. Low maintenance synthetics material like PVC trim

As you can see, there are many factors that determine the cost of a screened porch. Generally rustic style selections are more value oriented than a more finished style porch but there are iterations in between such as enclosing the rafters with a rustic style wood finish. What’s most important is creating a room that you’ll love. A porch is an investment not only in your home but in your quality time. You will likely spend time on your porch every day so make it a room you will thoroughly enjoy for many years to come.

Synthetics are for more than just decks. This screened porch in Upper Arlington was built using a gorgeous TimberTech floor.

The term composite is used to describe a broad spectrum of low maintenance materials. Because of the new introductions to the market, there are other low maintenance products that are actually not composite materials. Many people are familiar with composites or the idea of composites and that has become the Coca-Cola of the low maintenance materials. Because of the new and improved low maintenance materials, we now call this category synthetic decking and composites are just one of the materials in this synthetic category.

Composites are a mix of materials including wood fiber and plastic.  Product lines such as the TimberTech Twin Finish, and Trex Accents are good examples of traditional  wood/plastic composites. Traditional composite has now become the value oriented decking board because of the new products that have joined the category. Wood particles are still part of the makeup of the product which makes it porous. If you spill coffee, wine, or grease on the deck you will want to clean it up quickly just as you would inside your home. Other environmental factors such as bird droppings can lead to staining if now cleaned properly. We expect that in the next 5-6 years these composite products will fall by the wayside, they will still remain available but will probably not experience any dramatic growth in the popularity of these products with the other newcomers that are making their way into the spotlight.

Pure PVC products came onto the scene about 5-6 years ago. Lines such as AZEK, and TimberTech’s XLM, and Fiberon are great examples of pure PVC decking materials. They consist of PVC foam and a hard PVC cap that is non-porous. They are non-porous and accordingly will not stain permanently however when they become soiled, they will need to be cleaned with soap and water. Just because it’s low maintenance doesn’t mean it’s self cleaning.  PVC comes in a host of colors and new color introductions are made onto the market almost every year, so the selection is vast. You can get solid colors such as the TimberTech Natural Collection, or the TimberTech Tropical collection which has more streaking to replicate the look of real tropical hardwoods. These PVC products are oil-based so the natural colors are the least expensive, and the tropical collection forges into the higher end of the synthetic cost spectrum.

The newest synthetic product came onto the scene 2-3 years ago. This is called capstock. Capstock is a third generation synthetic which is also referred to as capped PVC. This product contains a composite core which has been capped, or wrapped in PVC. TimberTech Evolutions and Trex Escapes are good examples of capstock. In the Columbus market, Fiberon is the most costly because it is not stocked locally. The TimberTech capstocks are popular in this area because they are good products and the close proximity to their national office makes them easily obtainable. TimberTech now has a capstock line called Evolutions that has a realistic look of tropical hardwoods with streaking, and color variations that mimic the real thing. TimberTech also offers a line of natural color capstock as well. The beauty of capstock is the performance and the price point. Capstock is less expensive than pure PVC and performs beautifully.

The stunning outdoor fireplace within the screen porch uses mixed medias for a breathtaking design.

Not too long ago, we highlighted this project as a “coming soon” story while the screen porch was still under construction. Take a look.

We have since completed this stunning multifunctional outdoor structure and we want to share the grand finale with you. This new screened porch is in Arlington, OH. We removed a deck that was built in 2002 to accommodate the homeowner’s wish for a larger area that includes a screen porch to better suit their lifestyle.

The screened porch boasts an abundant 16 x 22 feet of useful space which includes a shed porch as well.  The homeowners used their own home’s unique blend of contemporary Frank Lloyd Wright  inspired design that includes large soffits with flat rubber roofs to pave the way for the outdoor room’s distinctive flair. The flooring is TimberTech’s XLM Walnut Grove flooring. We also used Screen Eze for the porch screen which is a durable and tough screen and can be used for extremely wide openings.  The finished ceiling is done in Paulownia tongue and groove and we also used the same roof columns to make it look 12″ x 12″ . To add to the zen effect that the structure and the house provide, we also added a spiral staircase exiting down to the existing deck that is on the docket for replacement by us for later this year. Since the rear of the house is situated on a ravine, the spiral staircase provides a dramatic effect.

Last but certainly not least, we also constructed a beautiful custom outdoor  fireplace to the screened porch to finish out this outdoor masterpiece. The fireplace is built with split stack style cultured stone on the veneer and topped off with a limestone mantle. The design includes a Rumford style firebox which is 36″ and is a taller firebox which projects more heat.

The design’s  coup de grâce is the exterior wall  finished in tile and the Feeney aluminum railing system with  Feeney cable rails. The clean lines, paired with the contemporary furnishings the homeowners chose makes this outdoor structure the very definition of zen in outdoor design.

Recently, our resident patio and hardscape expert shared some of his thoughts on the fundamentals of hardscape design.  Rob Mitchell is our patio and hardscape expert and is truly a craftsman.  He shared with me the basics that go into creating a magical outdoor space, and also the key elements that need that go into the recipe for aesthetic appeal, good function and convenience. In many instances our customers bring some of their own ideas to the table, Rob is able to take these ideas and translate them into the design in ways that are quite impressive. In design, every space is different, and should be treated as such.  We like to see something develop and enjoy working with homeowners through the entire process.

How arc and tangent play a role in good design

The initial thing we try to do with the design of each outdoor structure is to create a grand entrance into the structure, or a grand entrance exiting the structure. This goes back to the old cliché’ that ” first impressions mean everything”. This could not be more true, the first impression sets the tone and expectation for the design in its entirety. We usually achieve this through the staircase that leads you into the structure itself.  We use a great deal of arc and tangent design that incorporate the use of curved lines. Curved lines soften the back of your home, are more intriguing than straight lines, and offer more opportunities within the design to serve specific function. For instance, using curves and circles within the areas that you wish to designate for living and conversation areas versus dining areas. The decks from the past were squares and rectangles, using arc and tangent leaves more room for open creativity and lends the design to connect the curves with no flat spots so the design is seamless and continuous. Arc and tangent promote flow and harmony as you move from one structure to another, or from each area of designated function into another. Circles and curves are more relaxed and easier and more visually appealing to connect to.

The hot new trends are destined to become timeless classics

Design statements can also be made through the use of colors and textures.  Most of the time our customers allow us to pick the colors. In general, with patios and hardscapes, earth tones are very popular right now. We are seeing a trend towards the use of larger pavers with natural stone texture, similar to a rock texture on the top. One of the ways in which we like to add drama to  our hardscape designs is to change direction in which we lay the materials for our patios. Often times, we will lay the pavers soldier course around the patio and have a 45 degree angle. This spices the design up a bit. We also like to use seating walls with lighting and banding. The use of  retaining walls and planters blend especially well with a patio/deck combination structure because it adds height without creating a stark contrast. Thinking “outside the box” , by using arc and tangent when it comes to outdoor living designs offers more flow and harmony within the structure itself and makes it a joy to look at as well.

We are also building a large number of outdoor fire pits and fireplaces to partner with our deck and patio combinations. The only thing we would like to see people do more with is integrated patio lighting.  Good lighting creates an ambiance, not necessarily in areas that it would perform function, but to create more mood. Adding light to areas such as risers in stairs, beneath seating walls, or even as a banding in the border of a patio will create mood. Unilock pavers actually offer a glowing luminescent  paver to use in borders or as banding, it is not cheap, but the effect is well worth the cost.

Do you remember how excited Charlie from “Charlie and the Chocolate Factory” was when he got inside the chocolate factory and got see where and how Willy Wonka made all that scrumptious candy? Well, that is a little how I and members of the Archadeck of  team, Dennis Schaeffer and Rob Mitchell felt when we recently had the opportunity to take a plant tour of the TimberTech plant in Wilmington OH (Columbus) this past week.

We were invited to participate in the TimberTech plant tour along with other contractors and dealers from all over Ohio. The event was called “Dare to Compare”. On our walk-through we were able to see the product being made on extruders. We were also given the opportunity to review the company’s marketing and social media and what they do to help their contractors.  We spent time reviewing a number of new products and discussing the benefits these new products will have for our customers.  The plant here in the Columbus area makes all synthetic decking and rails. We were also able to visit the main plant in Wilmington, OH  where they  make the remainder of TimberTech products. In essence we got a dual tour of the TimberTech facilities during this visit.This particular facility has the capacity to send out 50 semi-trucks of their product daily, and their warehouse stores 500 semi-trucks full of product at a time. The massive size was awe inspiring.

I was fortunate enough to take a tour in 2006 when Archadeck of Columbus and TimberTech initially  established a relationship. The main point that sticks out in my mind from then until now is their expansion into other products. When I visited in 2006 it involved just wood and plastic composite. The trend we are seeing now is the growth of the PVC products and also the growth of polypropylene and polyethylene products as well.

Watching the magic happen in real-time is really amazing. The extrusion of the material appears  similar to “Play-doh” in composition, this material is put through a mold which gets pressed and becomes a shape. When mixing the wood pulp with the plastic there are numerous tests the product goes through, such as those similar to a stress test. TimberTech uses Maple in their wood pulp because it doesn’t absorb a lot of mold and mildew spores. They get the maple through recycling practices by using recycled wood cabinetry and furniture. They even re-use the waste off their own decking boards after they emboss a decking board and as it grinds out the top of the board, the remainder is then re-used.

They also conducted competitive comparisons on their product such as UV tests, humidity tests, mold and mildew tests, and scratch tests. TimberTech conducts these tests on their product and those of the competition, so we got to see a great deal of different manufactured products tested during the tour. A finished decking board takes an astounding 48 hours to cool completely after it’s production.

Our team walked away impressed with the entire process. Our biggest impressions were the extent of the efforts taken to ensure the product uses Green technology and how much TimberTech is actively involved with that. They have reduced their total waste by 95%, on what they used to send to the dump. TimberTech’s care and quality checks are also very impressive. As we watched the quality tests throughout the day, no stone is left unturned, from testing every hour for quality and the product’s tolerance level.

We would like to sincerely thank TimberTech for giving us this wonderful opportunity to experience this up close and personal. This only solidifies how proud we are to have them as a partner and how strong their presence is in the market.

We are really excited about the outdoor living season this year. We recently took part in two fantastic home shows in the area and got tons of ideas on the outdoor living trends for this Spring. While at the show we had a great deal of interest in not only decks, but also adding a patio to your deck.  The trend we see is that Columbus area homeowners are requesting the addition of a patio to go with their new AND existing decks and porches. It stands to reason that even when it comes to outdoor living structures the hot new idea is to double the fun.
