How arc and tangent play a role in good design

The initial thing we try to do with the design of each outdoor structure is to create a grand entrance into the structure, or a grand entrance exiting the structure. This goes back to the old cliché’ that ” first impressions mean everything”. This could not be more true, the first impression sets the tone and expectation for the design in its entirety. We usually achieve this through the staircase that leads you into the structure itself. We use a great deal of arc and tangent design that incorporate the use of curved lines. Curved lines soften the back of your home, are more intriguing than straight lines, and offer more opportunities within the design to serve specific function. For instance, using curves and circles within the areas that you wish to designate for living and conversation areas versus dining areas. The decks from the past were squares and rectangles, using arc and tangent leaves more room for open creativity and lends the design to connect the curves with no flat spots so the design is seamless and continuous. Arc and tangent promote flow and harmony as you move from one structure to another, or from each area of designated function into another. Circles and curves are more relaxed and easier and more visually appealing to connect to.

The hot new trends are destined to become timeless classics

Design statements can also be made through the use of colors and textures. Most of the time our customers allow us to pick the colors. In general, with patios and hardscapes, earth tones are very popular right now. We are seeing a trend towards the use of larger pavers with natural stone texture, similar to a rock texture on the top. One of the ways in which we like to add drama to our hardscape designs is to change direction in which we lay the materials for our patios. Often times, we will lay the pavers soldier course around the patio and have a 45 degree angle. This spices the design up a bit. We also like to use seating walls with lighting and banding. The use of retaining walls and planters blend especially well with a patio/deck combination structure because it adds height without creating a stark contrast. Thinking “outside the box” , by using arc and tangent when it comes to outdoor living designs offers more flow and harmony within the structure itself and makes it a joy to look at as well.

The only thing we would like to see people do more with is integrated patio lighting. Good lighting creates an ambiance, not necessarily in areas that it would perform function, but to create more mood. Adding light to areas such as risers in stairs, beneath seating walls, or even as a banding in the border of a patio will create mood. When we began to plan and design the structure we were given a blank canvas to work our magic on because the home was brand new. In order to achieve complete harmony in relation to the home the color selections played a huge role and tied everything together. We matched the brick used on the outdoor fireplace to the brick on the home. We also chose a color for the large composite deck that would blend beautifully with the stonework and columns and pillars that were used to create this magnificent outdoor structure. We even matched the lanterns that are used throughout the structure atop the caps on the retaining walls to continue the neutral, rustic feel that is present throughout the design of the entire structure.

We chose to use composite decking material on the deck. Composites are ultra low maintenance and don’t require staining or sealing. Composites are also scratch and stain resistant, and many are impervious to insects, mold and mildew as well. They are also long-lasting and cannot be damaged by the moisture which is present when you use the hot tub. With this particular deck, using composites gave us the freedom to install the decking boards on a beautifully interesting angle which only adds to the appeal of the deck.

To convert or not to convert, that is the question.

Archadeck of Columbus discusses the A,B,C’s of converting a deck into a screened porch. In a frank and sincere manner to convey what every homeowner considering a conversion such as this needs to know.

Would you like to forgo applying sunscreen or insect repellent every time you go outside to spend time on your deck or patio? If so, Archadeck of Columbus may just have a solution. So, if you wish to expand and add a new roof, the foundation of the structure must be extended and new footers created at the corners to support and hold the weight. What seems like the most simple of questions has to be answered prior to any of the above moving forward, most importantly, can the builder even get underneath the structure to reinforce it?

Don’t fret. Everything a quality builder does has to be properly permitted and inspected. This means the previous structure you have, if it passed inspection, should be deemed sound as a deck. But it may well not be strong enough to withstand the weight of a roof because it wasn’t made that way. Be aware from the beginning that most builders will only warrant the framed portion of the structure that they build. This means if something goes awry with the substructure as a result of adding a new roof, you cannot use their warranty anymore. This is why Archadeck of Columbus recommends a porch builder reinforce the foundation so it supports the new roofed structure.

Even if it is not possible to convert your deck or patio into a screened porch, many builders, us included, offer the customer a chance to build the backyard of their dreams through “staged building”. Pergolas, also know as arbors or trellises are limitless in their design. Materials such as traditional wood and cedar are options to consider when deciding upon your pergola. Treated wood moves by expanding and contracting, whereas cedar doesn’t move because of the oils within the wood itself. Cedar is more costly than treated wood, so this is a consideration you may want to think about.
