An eye catching design, quality materials and functional space make up this TimberTech deck and paver patio combination structure in Dublin, OH that we recently unveiled.
This stunning hardscape patio and TimberTech deck combination in Dublin, Ohio is proof that a functional addition to your outdoor living doesn’t have to be huge nor does it need to cost a fortune. Many times lot constrictions, setbacks and a lack of usable space create a scenario where an expansive space isn’t possible. It is possible however to create a space that is simple, effective and pretty in spite of limitations. Take a look at this finished outdoor project.
These homeowners wanted a space that would allow for some relief from the sun for their child, as well as an area where they could enjoy their beautiful backyard as a family. We came up with a combination structure design that provides both. The family’s new backyard space now consists of a low maintenance composite deck and paver patio, with a hardscape path that ties the two structures together an provides a way to and from the outdoor area from the side of the home.
The new deck was built using TimberTech XLM in Walnut Grove. We installed the boards using a unique pattern and finished the design with a picture frame border that spans the entire outside perimeter of the deck. It adds visual interest when we are able to work in a unique pattern or design into a deck, a step beyond your normal everyday deck. The railings were done in white vinyl to compliment the windows of the home and they also help bring the rich Walnut Grove color of the deck into the spotlight. We also built a wide-angle step box which leads down to the paver patio below.
On the paver patio we used Unilock Camelot pavers in Coffee Creek, this color palette leads down to the walkway and around to the driveway as well. We accented the Camelot pavers with a Holland Stone soldier course edge to add contrast. The entire area is conducive to good traffic flow which will make both areas more functional for everyday enjoyment. The homeowners are elated with the finished project and are looking forward to enjoying their new outdoor area for many years to come.

Archadeck of Columbus spotlights a recent project in Dublin, OH that features a cedar screen porch and paver patio extension and renovation. The new space functions as an outdoor living and dining room space, and so much more.
Many times adding on a combination outdoor living area that consists of a few well planned outdoor structures can equal the same enjoyment as adding a few room additions to your home. Having multiple living and entertaining areas to work with will increase the time you spend outdoors and increase the degree of function your backyard provides.
We recently completed a project in Dublin, Ohio that included a custom screen porch addition and an extension of an existing hardscape patio. The area we added to the patio enables the space to function as two separate outdoor living areas. From the screened porch we also added a beautiful landing with a unique angled stairway that leads down into the patio. The increase in the size of the patio enables the homeowners to have two distinct areas for dining and entertaining and there is even ample enough space to comfortably facilitate two outdoor dining tables with chairs. Did someone say the perfect space for an outdoor dinner party this summer? Watch the video of the completed project and see the ultimate outdoor living space come to life.
The screened porch has an open gable roof design that ties into the existing home perfectly. The interior of the screen porch was built using rustic, aromatic cedar. The ceiling boasts cedar exposed rafters, large 12 x 12 roof columns and elegant transoms over the windows that are usually only seen in interior building. We also included a 24 inch knee wall made of tongue and groove cedar. The king truss is visually interesting and also serves weight function requirements due to the 2nd story cantilever.
The extension on the patio included increasing the radius of the area, and replacement of patio materials. We used Unilock Beacon Hill flagstone pavers with a soldier course edge and tied in a gorgeous ribbon in complimentary hues. We also extended the existing hardscape retaining wall and built a bar ledge that the customer had stained to match the cedar used on the screen porch interior.
Creating the ultimate outdoor living environment like this one is possible in your backyard too. Contact Archadeck of Columbus to learn more about creating your own outdoor oasis today.Call for a free consultation: (740) 879 – 3730

Archadeck of Columbus focuses on our recently completed open porch and custom fire pit addition in Gahanna, OH.
We recently covered the progress of a lovely open porch in Gahanna, OH that revealed a design full of curves in all the right places. The project is now finished and as we anticipated, it turned out stunning. The homeowners are ecstatic with joy over their new outdoor living space. We put together a little video to walk you through the completed project.
The open porch design features a curvilinear hardscape patio, with a curved step down into the patio from the home. It also includes a custom fire pit and adjacent hardscape seating wall, which is also curved. We tied the area into the home seamlessly under a shed roof with an adjacent gable roofed tie in area.
The materials that were used offer clean, flowing lines with a touch of rustic details added to the mix. Underneath the porch we used Unilock pavers in Brussels and finished it out with a soldier course done in Unilock pavers in Il Campo. The two shades seam together effortlessly. As you enter the fire pit and seating wall area of the space you will notice we also used the Unilock paver in Brussels, but finished it out with ledge stone caps on both the fire pit and the seating wall that have a rough-hewn edge offering a structure with a rustic, yet elegant touch. The interior of the covered porch reveals a stunning cedar ceiling that harmonizes perfectly with the extensive use of high-quality hardscape materials used in this project.
The homeowners now have the ability to extend the amount of function their home provides into the new covered porch addition. They will now have the luxury to soak in their hot tub while the ambiance of the custom fire pit takes their enjoyment up a notch. There is also spacious room under the cover of the open porch to dine and entertain. Not only does their new covered porch add value to their home, it adds valuable outdoor living space as well.

Archadeck of Columbus checks in on an “in Progress” paver patio in Gahanna, Oh.
In outdoor structure design the presence of curved edges makes the structure more interesting and opens the door for endless design and landscaping possibilities. This covered patio in Gahanna, OH is currently under construction and is full of dramatic curves and aesthetic appeal.
The design will encompass an area of 531 square feet and will include a custom fire pit with an adjacent hardscape seating wall. The curved edges of the patio will be finished using a soldier course and stunning cedar wrapped 6 x 6 columns. The hardscape color choice combined with the cedar will add a rustic elegance to the entire patio.
The Gahanna homeowners have chosen a Unilock Brussels coffee creek paver with mixed hues of Terra-cotta, browns and grey. The expanse of the patio will be completed in this hardscape and includes abundant room for dining, seating and anything else these homeowners have in mind. The paver takes its cues from old world flavors reminiscent of brick paved streets from a by-gone era. Archadeck of Columbus turns the spotlight on a versatile combination of outdoor structures in Columbus which includes a rustic open porch, and patio with separate seating area. The perfect match for the outdoor living season.
Open porches take us back to a time when you spent the summer afternoon sipping lemonade while rocking away the time on the porch in the company of friends and family. Open porches sure have changed and evolved. Once upon a time an open porch was only a front of the house, or back of the house thing. Today’s open porch designs include detached, open gables, intricate ceilings, and many other “goodies” hidden inside. Open porches now include many different convenient amenities such as outdoor kitchens, lighting, ceiling fans, fireplaces and even televisions.
This open porch we recently completed has an open gable roof to allow lots of sunshine to enter the area. The gable includes a stunning decorative element called a keystone centerpiece. The homeowner wanted to use a minimal number of columns so they could utilize the open area more efficiently; therefore we used four columns in the porch’s construction. In doing so we had to engineer the size of the beams to take care of the abundant span on this 17 x 21 area.
Along with the keystone used on the rafter, we also used a keystone on the king truss. The large king truss serves two purposes; aesthetic appeal and the ever important structural support. We were also able to hang the ceiling fan from the king truss to provide further visual interest, and more function.
Since the homeowners specifically asked for intricate details and plenty of lighting in their new open porch, we wrapped everything in rustic cedar. The rustic touches can also be seen in the use of the large 4 X 6 rafters we used. We included lots of lighting including skylights, and lighting on the ridge beams as well.
The beauty and function doesn’t end with the open porch. We also built a patio below with a separate seating area, built with unilock pavers. This multi-structure outdoor area serves all the purposes the homeowners desired and then some. These Columbus, OH homeowners are looking forward to many lazy afternoons on their new open porch, from lemonades to entertaining, the world is the limit.

Our own design and installation expert, Rob Mitchell, discusses the elements of creating a memorable outdoor structure, or combination of outdoor structures, in your backyard.
Recently, our resident patio and hardscape expert shared some of his thoughts on the fundamentals of hardscape design. Rob Mitchell is our patio and hardscape expert and is truly a craftsman. He shared with me the basics that go into creating a magical outdoor space, and also the key elements that need that go into the recipe for aesthetic appeal, good function and convenience. In many instances our customers bring some of their own ideas to the table, Rob is able to take these ideas and translate them into the design in ways that are quite impressive. In design, every space is different, and should be treated as such. We like to see something develop and enjoy working with homeowners through the entire process.
How arc and tangent play a role in good design
The initial thing we try to do with the design of each outdoor structure is to create a grand entrance into the structure, or a grand entrance exiting the structure. This goes back to the old cliché’ that ” first impressions mean everything”. This could not be more true, the first impression sets the tone and expectation for the design in its entirety. We usually achieve this through the staircase that leads you into the structure itself. We use a great deal of arc and tangent design that incorporate the use of curved lines. Curved lines soften the back of your home, are more intriguing than straight lines, and offer more opportunities within the design to serve specific function. For instance, using curves and circles within the areas that you wish to designate for living and conversation areas versus dining areas. The decks from the past were squares and rectangles, using arc and tangent leaves more room for open creativity and lends the design to connect the curves with no flat spots so the design is seamless and continuous. Arc and tangent promote flow and harmony as you move from one structure to another, or from each area of designated function into another. Circles and curves are more relaxed and easier and more visually appealing to connect to.
The hot new trends are destined to become timeless classics
Design statements can also be made through the use of colors and textures. Most of the time our customers allow us to pick the colors. In general, with patios and hardscapes, earth tones are very popular right now. We are seeing a trend towards the use of larger pavers with natural stone texture, similar to a rock texture on the top. One of the ways in which we like to add drama to our hardscape designs is to change direction in which we lay the materials for our patios. Often times, we will lay the pavers soldier course around the patio and have a 45 degree angle. This spices the design up a bit. We also like to use seating walls with lighting and banding. The use of retaining walls and planters blend especially well with a patio/deck combination structure because it adds height without creating a stark contrast. Thinking “outside the box” , by using arc and tangent when it comes to outdoor living designs offers more flow and harmony within the structure itself and makes it a joy to look at as well.
We are also building a large number of outdoor fire pits and fireplaces to partner with our deck and patio combinations. Letting Archadeck of Columbus design a custom feature such as this promotes continuity of the custom feel and we can pull accents from your home to make it a cohesive design. Rob said, ” if he won the lottery himself, he would build a deck/patio/outdoor fireplace combination in his own backyard.” This speaks volumes on the impact adding an outdoor fireplace or fire pit can make in your own backyard!
The only thing we would like to see people do more with is integrated patio lighting. Good lighting creates an ambiance, not necessarily in areas that it would perform function, but to create more mood. Adding light to areas such as risers in stairs, beneath seating walls, or even as a banding in the border of a patio will create mood. Unilock pavers actually offer a glowing luminescent paver to use in borders or as banding, it is not cheap, but the effect is well worth the cost.

Archadeck of Columbus is able to create three seperate outdoor structures that work as one. It is not often that you have a combination of structures that work together effortlessly to create not just a grouping of spaces but an entire outdoor living area. These Columbus, OH homeowners definitely scored a triple play with this stunning second story double-deck, rustic screen porch and beautiful paver patio. Archadeck of Columbus used composite, low-maintenance TimberTech XLM decking in Sandridge to cover the second story double-deck and accented it with black aluminum railings. On the lower level, a rustic screen porch welcomes you with its breathtaking and aromatic cedar walls and trim. The floor of the screen porch is finished with large concrete slab pavers that resemble tile to carry on the rustic theme, we also used Unilock pavers around the porch itself. The screen porch spills out onto a beautifully designed patio . As always, Archadeck of Columbus paid close attention to every important detail of this outdoor oasis by making sure the roof between the deck and screened porch below is a dry roof to keep out moisture that could cause damage to the structures. For the final touch we added small flush mounted low voltage lighting for safety and ambiance.
